About us

One community, at home and abroad

The Kerr Jarga Foundation (KJF) is a non-profit organisation dedicated to helping and giving back to our community. We serve Kerr Jarga and the diaspora through development, education, and collective action.

Why the foundation exists

Kerr Jarga is a community held together by family ties that stretch across borders. People who grew up here now live and work in other countries, and many of them want to give something back — but individual generosity is hard to turn into lasting change on its own. Money sent informally is difficult to track, projects start and stall, and nobody can say with confidence what has been achieved.

The foundation exists to solve that. It gives the community one organised way to raise funds, agree priorities, run projects and report honestly on what was done with every contribution. It is not a substitute for the family and neighbourhood ties that already exist; it is the structure that lets those ties accomplish bigger things.

What we stand for

  • Collective action over individual effort. A community that organises can take on projects no single member could fund alone.
  • Transparency as a habit, not a favour. Members should be able to see where money went, what it paid for, and what is planned next.
  • Local knowledge leads. Priorities are set with the people who live in Kerr Jarga, not decided from a distance.
  • Long-term over one-off. We would rather finish a small project properly than announce a large one we cannot complete.

How we work

Members join the foundation and, where fees apply, contribute annually. Those contributions are pooled and directed into agreed projects. Every member is registered with a unique membership number, which keeps the register accurate and makes it possible to see at any point who is a member, in which category, and whether their membership is current.

Projects are proposed, discussed and agreed by the membership and the foundation’s officers. Once a project is approved, it is assigned to a small group who see it through, and the outcome is reported back to members. Progress is shared on the updates page and in the gallery.

Who does what

The foundation is run by members, for members. Officers are drawn from the community and hold responsibility for specific areas — membership administration, finance and treasury, and the oversight of projects. Roles and named officers will be published here as they are confirmed.

Where we are

The foundation serves Kerr Jarga and the wider diaspora. Members live in The Gambia and in a number of countries abroad, and the register records each member’s country of residence so that the community can see its own shape.
